BACKGROUND
Bhubaneswar is the capital of Odisha known as Temple city, which is decked with temples and ponds. People from around the world come to visit temples and monuments of the city. With the backdrop of tourist places and availability of facility many people's ambushed by several bad addictions leading to malpractice. Old town in Bhubaneswar is the location where famous Lingaraj temple is situated and within Old town area all types of drugs and using substances easily accessible to all because people from nook and corner comes to visit lord Siva and other deities. All the youngsters are engaging themselves in tourism and temple rituals related work and getting easy earning. Due to peer relation and weak psychic they have been practicing chemicals like Bhang, Ganja, Brown Sugar and Injective drugs. The age groups of the drug users are from 14 to 45. All the Hard core drug users from different parts of Odisha are coming to Old Town due to easy availability of narcotics item .It is a safer and easily accessible place for drug users to find drugs and other mind altering chemicals. The hard core addicts are spending their all income in terms of using drugs and unlawful activities. For which they loosed their employability, friends, family and social acceptability. Some of the drug users have been to jails, hospitals and also are in the girth of death. But there is no hope for the drug users. But some of the determined drug users are committed for a cause and kicking of the drug and working for their groups.
The group felt that as a first step they need to pay back to society what it had provided them and also minimize the damage due to drug addiction and its implications for HIV/AIDS. The purpose of a collective effort was to prevent the catastrophes of a colossal economic, social and human cost brought into Odisha by the epidemic of drug use and its implication to HIV/AIDS. An indispensable need was felt to project forward for the salvage and uplift of society. Through the power of the collective initiative and with the motto- "Humility, Courage & Wisdom" in their hearts, Youth Development Foundation moved forward consistently with "human responses" to fulfill their vision.
But on the other hand, it is encouraging in seeing a good number of drug users being brought and sustained in the mainstream and enabling them to earn their livelihood on their own -free of drugs. More than 40 drug users' families are being brought into vocational training and work-sheds.
In the context of globalization the issue of HIV/AIDS has interconnection with the issue of poverty; Gender based violence, migration and development aggressions in the state. Keeping view on our long experience Youth Development Foundation has strongly felt the importance of strategic and collective response to the issue of HIV-AIDS through clear Vision and Mission of the organization.
The Youth Development Foundation came forward to recovered addicts/ ex drug users to try and provide services to addicts who wish to come out of the clutches of their addiction. Since, most of the people who are a part of the Youth Development Foundation found their escape from drugs through the help of the Narcotics Anonymous (NA), on an ideological level they lean heavily on the principles of NA.

PAST INITIATIVES
Working for the drug users is nothing new for the organization, but we did it something differently as we have a group of devoted recovery addicts who inspired their community members for drug de addiction by counseling and referring them to other deaddiction centers and accompanying them. When the treated clients return from the detoxification centre, members of YDF provided them emotional support and try to involve them in self help groups such as NA/AA for their complete abstinence and quality living in the family as well as in the society. As it was our aim to provide service to the drug users. YDF supported organizations to arrange the detoxification camp and also supported their activities till the end of camp. The statement of experiences reveals that drug addicts need utmost care; love and affection from the service providersŐ Though it is very hard to identify the new drug users and hidden drug users still due to community involvement they easily identified from different sites and locations. Near about 40 drug users are maintaining their sobriety and leading a responsible, productive and memorable life.

DRUG DE-ADDICTION CENTRE
Rationale behind the centre
The Youth development foundation comes with an attempt to recovered addicts/ ex drug users and to provide services to addicts who wish to come out of the clutches of their addiction. Since, most of the people who are a part of the Youth development foundation found their escape from drugs through the help of the Narcotics Anonymous (NA), on an ideological level they lean heavily on the principles of NA.
Uniqueness of this centre
The most unique and powerful aspect of this de-addiction centre is that the addicts are under the care and protection of ex-addicts who have already been through the process of addiction, de-addiction and the struggle to lead a clean life. Everyone at each level of administration starting from the director, project manager, counselor and even the cook and ward boy is ex-addicts. The understanding thus, is much better and the addicts can relate better to the people trying to help them. The establishment of a rapport, a connection and a belief in the people working for them is much faster because in the case of addicts it is very important to believe that they can lead a clean life. Also, the establishment of a connection is very important because in the addicts mind if he doesn't trust the people helping him the entire process remains futile; the addict will only be a passive and not an active listener. There are negotiations on liberty of the addicts in terms of free time or entertainment. This also ensures employability of the addicts. Some workers have been treated here in hope itself. So it also provides livelihood options and a never-ending support system. It is also important to note that a person can come back and stay for sometime in the centre for moral support anytime after leaving the centre.
Demographic composition of the centre:
The centre consists of addicts in different phases i.e. initial, middle and end phase of their treatment. The residents in the initial stage show denial, depression or aggression. The residents who come to the centre unwillingly are more angry and aggressive than the others. In the middle phase there is a transition in the thought process, a subtle realization and the residents relate more to the process of treatment. In the end stage the resident is in total connection with the method of treatment and there is active listening and internalization as opposed to bland hearing out the counselor.
Number of Residents:
At any given point of time there are approximately 40 patients in the centre at any given time.
STAGES OF TREATMET
First Stage: - Treatment of the Withdrawal Symptoms
When a drug user stops drinking, his body craves for the drink, and he will have sweating, shaking and lack of sleep, irritation and restlessness. There are certain drugs which can help him to cope with these withdrawal symptoms.
Second Stage: Maintenance Treatment:
Once out of the withdrawal symptoms, the drug users are helped to stay off alcohol over the long term. He follows a routine; he disciplines himself to do things necessary to maintain his sobriety. He does introspection, he starts taking corrective actions to repair the mistakes of the past, and he starts to reintegrate himself with his family and the society. Eventually, he starts becoming a productive and responsible member of the society.
Third Stage: Relapse Prevention:
Drug users have to try several times before they succeed. Relapses are common with any habit. Certain techniques are helpful in avoiding a relapse. The alcoholic inculcates these methods and techniques to stay away from the first drink. He understands that it is the first drink that does the damage.
Management
The management of the centre will be taken care by a youth collective who are clean and deaddicted under the leadership of Mr Trilochan Moharana. He has been working in the sector for the last 15 years in various capacities with many international and national organizations and happens to be trustee of Youth Development Foundation will be the project director.
Except for the doctors and the technical human resources, all other support staff in the centre are either deaddicts and addicts who are aspiring to lead a normal and positive life.
